April 2017 Presentation of the RAMPAM Project in Monaco – The Monegasque Association for Nature Protection is to help finance a RAMPAM project to create a network of Marine Protected Areas for the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco region. The aim of the RAMPAM network is to link small marine protected areas to create an integrated management system for the Alpes-Maritimes and the Principality of Monaco that is relevant and offers sustainable management of the coastal area. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are recognized worldwide as effective environmental management tools. Small-scale MPAs, even those that are close to highly developed urban areas, can play an even more important role when they are linked together in a network. The challenge for the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco region is to create a functional network that will involve larger players and implement a balanced management system for marine biodiversity. Work carried out for many years by the ECOMERS laboratory at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and its partners shows that linking MPAs together in a network is the best alternative for balanced biodiversity management. Three years will be sufficient to launch an operational management system and ensure that it is sustainable over the long term. The funding will make it possible to recruit a scientist to lead it. This network will be especially effective as it can draw upon the academic knowledge of the ECOMERS laboratory at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, will benefit from the involvement of local MPA managers and is already based on raising the awareness of economic and institutional partners, which is essential for its functioning.
